Share life · Communal lifestyle

DNS is another kind of school where teachers and students share life in a community setting. We think that people are more powerful if they are together and use their potential to build something bigger that they impossibly can do on their own. DNS is a boarding school with a communal lifestyle on a campus that also hosts a youth college and care homes for people with special needs.

The Tvind campus is situated in Western Jutland in Denmark and is like a small village where different kinds of people live together.  Apart from DNS there are four other units in Tvind:  PTG International Youth College, The Day School, and “The Villas”, a care home for people with special needs (the so-called Heart Chambers). The Heart Chambers and DNS share the same common facilities, have meals together and participate in some of the same weekly activities.

Alone the world changes you – together we change the world

One of the biggest advantages of our communal lifestyle is that it is possible to create and sustain something bigger! Other advantages are the minimisation of used resources, the saving of time and the rich social life created by everybody living together. When asked why we share our time, space and lives, we use to answer that “Alone the world changes you, and together we change the world”.

Sharing the same space and our lives together, comes with great benefits and also with many big responsibilities. In order to make everything work there is something very important that everybody needs to do, to take ownership over the place.

Training in taking responsibility for your community and the planet

At DNS, students and teachers share the responsibility for the running of the school. That means that together we can make sure that everything works, from the practical daily running to the most theoretical and organisational tasks. We think that by learning how to take a real responsibility for the school, the students are much more able, and better prepared, to also take on responsibilities for improving certain conditions elsewhere, carrying in their hands the power to change things. The ability to  improve serious global situations, and improve the lives of the people of the planet is in great demand for the foreseeable future.

Teaching people to manage their responsibilities, to take initiative, to assume leadership positions and to know that they are able to take on big challenges with their own hands are part of our pedagogy and our communal lifestyle.

Sharing time · sharing economy · sharing life: a communal lifestyle

Apart from the daily running of the school and sharing time, sharing economy and the common life itself, everybody in DNS are united by other aspects such as the Frames (No alcohol, no drugs policy) and a passion for making that famous difference.
