What more is so special about this education?
From the first day of the DNS it has been a place where people were living together, sharing their traditions, views and opinions. Due to this mix of cultures and nationalities, people were able to develop a unique and alternative place. The spirit can be easily felt until nowadays. People are living together and creating the alternative education together.
What does it mean?
Living and sharing life creates the community life. It includes daily living, which includes questions about the meal, cleaning and etc., studying together, gaining experiences e.g. by travelling together. So basically, students are living and interacting with each other every day due to be able to reach the goals in an alternative education.
Being a student in DNS, you are not only responsible for yourself, but also for the functioning of the community life. Since we can actually do most of the maintenance by ourselves, why not do it indeed, because we learn a lot while practising, especially since no one is better served than by himself. There is a lot of organization behind this chaotic-looking system!
Each student has responsibilities, which can be organizing school management, the income and expense economy of the team, cleaning common areas, recycling, repairing, study material and food shopping, helping the cook, gardening in the school's organic farm and decide for improvements. And most of the responsibilities actually involve more than one person at a time.
While contributing in all of this, students realize how much they can reach together while tasks are shared between them and how much things depend on them to be done. Responsibilities are therefore part of what makes this school being another kind of school.
"A healthy social life is found only, when in the mirror of each soul the whole community finds its reflection, and when in the whole community the virtue of each one is living"
~ Rudolf Steiner (March 30, 1925)
