Why is DNS necessary ?

DNS is an abbreviation for "Det Nødvendige Seminarium" , which in English means "The Necessary Teacher Training College". Necessary because it is very necessary to educate good teachers for bringing up the many children in the world – the privileged as well as the underprivileged – and it is necessary to do this using many more methods than books and blackboards.

We find it necessary that the future teachers :

  • Gain a lot of teaching experiences as well as life skills
  • Are ready to invent and implement new ways and methods of teachingAre prepared to overcome the difficulties it takes to go new ways
  • Get to know the world and understand the many different people living in it – not only with the brain, but also with the heart – through personal    experiences from being together with villagers in Africa, homeless in Norway, kids with special needs in Denmark, young teacher trainees in Africa or India who are struggling to improve the education systems in the rural areas
  • Know how to teach the subjects lively and make the children to the main persons in their own learning process
  • Have the will and desire to care for the children socially
  • Have an understanding for society and for the situation the parents and children find themselves in
  • Have the will and courage to prepare the kids for the future which will come
  • Have a great interest in the situation of our world today and the will to be an active part of changing things which go wrong and developing better solutions

DNS started in 1972 in Tvind, Ulfborg, Denmark and has influenced many educators in Denmark and further proved with its pragmatic approach that through teaching and educating it can be at the forefront regarding pedagogical issues.
DNS is an international school with students from many different countries in Europe. They speak English and learn Danish and other languages as well. The teacher trainees live in the middle of a school centre with a great variety of young people and youngsters of all kinds – adventurous, humoristic, energetic, talented, peculiar and lively, marginalized, underprivileged – all of whom are sharing the daily life with each other. The DNSers are letting them solidly under their skin and into their hearts.

A major part of the programme consists of getting experiences in many areas through taking big responsibilities. To study the subjects takes part in shorter concentrated periods with focus on one subjects at a time.
Here you will use your heads, hearts and hands as well.

Life in DNS is a different lifestyle. There are no cleaners, builders, mechanics or dishwashers, so you have to be ready to do it all yourself. But don’t worry, as part of a team within 4 teams in DNS you can share all this duties and responsibilities with each other, and together everything is much easier.
