The School Practice Field:

Training in experiencing and understanding the reality of children and teachers in school, with connected theoretical studies, 8 months.

Option one:

8 months working as a substitute teacher, teaching children and youngsters in different European settings.

Option two:

With our school centre in Tvind as base, for 3months working as teachers in the local region, followed by 5 months working at the Small Schools in Tvind and Bustrup – schools for youngsters with special needs.

In both options :

The team organize themselves in groups of ten plus one teacher who then together choose option one or option two. Through the work everyone gets close to the children, their parents and to the school subjects with their contents and methods. Teaching plans are made, discussed, changed, developed and implemented in practice, which in the end delivers the final judgement.

Lively discussions become part of the daily life. What shall the students learn and why? How do we make all the pupils the driving force in their learning process? How do we qualify them to take charge and be masters in their own lives? How do we teach them solidary humanism? How can we include the parents and the community in the learning process? Should we take our pupils out in the community to see what happens early in the morning or late at night?

Should we have shorter courses around important themes ending with products like exhibitions, arrangements, small films or theatre plays? Which teaching materials are the best to use? Should we produce some materials ourselves around important themes with a more practical outlook? Can we involve the pupils in producing their own materials?

Each DNSer gets valuable teaching and pedagogical experiences during this period. Close cooperation with colleagues is another important learning process. Through observing, discussing, asking, and giving input, we become an important part of the teacher council by bringing new energy and ideas to the school, and at the same time learning a lot.

Each DNSer plans and carries out an Action Research Project in the practice school, and each DNSer formulates a title of a burning or developmental issue to investigate.

Studying specializations at DNS in Denmark, ending with one month of final exams, 4 months.

The education ends with the whole team together at the college, studying the last specializations, concluding on the education, taking their final exams and sending each other on to a good and productive future performing the profession of teaching.
